Pickerel Pond Woodland, Scotchtown, Maquapit Lake,
New Brunswick, Canada

Description of the woods:

Parcels 45015898 & 45162005 form a 78 ha (192 acre) property on the eastern shore of Maquapit Lake, northeast of Scotchtown, New Brunswick. The trees at Pickerel Pond encircle a small “keyhole” lake which is actually a pond separated from Maquapit Lake by a gravel and sand bar.

The forest ecosystem is diverse and consists of plots of old growth interspersed with newer, early successional and bog species. A zone of Silver Maple interspersed with hundred year old Bur Oaks is found adjacent to the two gravel/sand arms of the pond. Red Maples occupy the higher ground nearby. As you walk through the woods, you will come upon small bog areas that are more open in nature and are dominated by Tamarack and Black Spruce. Cinnamon Fern dominate large areas of the understory here. Some areas of abandoned farm fields have recently reverted to forest; here you will find White Birch and Trembling Aspen, Lowbush Blueberry, Sweetgale and, in spring, the blazing pink of Rhodora. In the rich, mature areas of hardwood, salamanders may be found cradled in deadfall on the forest floor. Painted turtles frequent the pond and lowland areas and may be seen sunning themselves on semi-submerged logs. Deer and snowshoe hare and four species of frogs (Leopard, Green, Mink and Wood) have been observed on the property. The woodland is on a major bird migration route as evidenced by the Black Duck and Canada Geese that frequent the pond.

Access is easily gained from Denton Road or Back Road.

A detailed map of the preserve can be found here.
